Small red beans are similar to red kidney beans, except that they are smaller in size, rounder, darker in color, smoother in texture, and their flavor is slightly different. Small red beans are also called Mexican Red Beans. Small red beans are popular in diets from the Caribbean and Central American regions where it is often eaten with rice. They hold their shape and firmness when cooked.
Small red beans can be used in soups, salads, chili and Creole dishes. In the Southwest, they’re often used to make refried beans and chili. In Louisiana, they’re used to make the classic red beans and rice.
